On December 17, 2001, Florida Governor Jeb Bush signed
a bill to delay implementation of the new Florida Building Code. The
code will now take effect on March 1, 2002, instead of January 1.
The new code would have had an important impact on the hurricane protection
industry by defining the states wind-borne debris regions and
high velocity hurricane zone, addressing a statewide system for product
evaluation and approval and establishing fees.
Some in the hurricane protection industry feel the delay was a major
setback, indicating how politicized the new building code had become.
The new code was heavily lobbied by building and trade associations.
The International Hurricane Protection Association (IHPA), Miami,
FL, has called for a board meeting after the first of the new year
to discuss its plans in light of the delay.
